Deadwood Task Group

The Deadwood Task Group was established in June 2005 with the following remit:

Background

During the process of revising the standard it was agreed that further research should be carried out on deadwood (6.2.2). As this would not be available in time for inclusion in the current review process the following note has been included under the guidance column in the standard:

“Revised guidance is being prepared by the UKWAS Steering Group to take account of new and emerging scientific evidence. This revised guidance will be available from the UKWAS Support Unit from [12 months after publishing] and at that point will replace the guidance provided below.”

Next Steps

A Task Group is to be established and mandated to produce the revised guidance within the 12 month deadline.

The members of the Steering Group to join the group are to be: Chris Inglis, Simon Hart and Richard Robertson. The Steering Group approved Chris Inglis as Chair of the group.

External experts who are to be invited to act as advisers include: Jon Humphries and Sallie Bailey of FC, Jill Butler of Woodland Trust and Keith Kirby of English Nature.

Reporting

The Task group is to report and make recommendations to the UKWAS Steering Group. The Steering Group will own any reports.

Task

The Task Group is to be established to help develop guidance on the provision of deadwood as required by section 6.2.2 of the standard. This guidance need not be an UKWAS owned document. The Group will work with external experts and practitioners to review best practice and new and emerging scientific evidence. It will report progress to Steering Group meetings with a deadline of end-2005 for the preparation of guidance which can be held and/or referenced on the UKWAS web site.
