UK Woodland Assurance Standard (Second Edition) - Summary of Main Changes

This paper provides summary information on the main changes incorporated in the second edition but is not a full list of all the changes made. It will be particularly helpful for those owners and managers whose woodlands are already certified and who will need to align their practices with the new requirements in accordance with the rules of their certification programme - you should refer to your certification authority for further details.

The following information is specifically referred to in the text of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard:

Section 1.1: Compliance and Conformance

In accordance with section 1.1.5, the owner, manager or tenant shall be committed to conformance to the UK Woodland Assurance Standard and shall have declared an intention to protect and maintain the ecological integrity of the woodland in the long term.

The following are examples of such declarations:

Woodland Trust

"The Trust underwent a successful re-assessment in 2003 and is committed to gaining and maintaining a new certificate to cover its entire UK woodland estate for a further five years"

Forestry Commission Wales

"We will undertake and promote sustainable forest management in Wales through:
- sustainable management of the Assembly woodland estate to UKWAS, monitored through independent FSC certification:
- promotion of sustainable forest management plans based on UKWAS so facilitating significantly the step to certification."

Section 5.2: Pesticides, Biological Control Agents and Fertilizers

Flow Charts

A series of flow charts provides guidance on decision making for various vegetation control scenarios.

Derogations

The Forest Stewardship Council produces a definitive list of ‘highly hazardous’ pesticides. In accordance with section 5.2.4 of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard, these pesticides cannot be used unless 'a specific UK derogation has been granted'. However, due to a change in FSC rules since the UKWAS standard was published no national level derogations are now granted; instead individual certificate holders must make their own specific applications.

Both FSC and PEFC certificate holders are advised to consult their certification body.
